MAM international secretary elected to CP subcommittee - 1/12/2003

At the recent meeting of the Standing Committee of European Doctors held in Vienna, Malta was admitted as a full member, with Dr Myra K Tilney, International Secretary of the Medical Association of Malta being appointed Board member.

The General Assembly also elected Dr Tilney to be Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Organisation of Healthcare, social security, health economics, and pharmaceutical industry for a term of office of two years, from January 2004,when Malta officially becomes a full voting member.

The Standing Committee of European Doctors represents 1.6 million European doctors within the EU/EEC and over two million in an enlarged EU, and its' objectives are to promote the highest standards for public health and medical practice at the EU level. In January, it will expand to include all the new EU candidate countries: Malta has been an associate member for many years, with Dr Tilney being Head of Delegation since 2000.

The sub-committee on Organisation of Healthcare, social security, health economics, and pharmaceutical industry addresses the promotion of high quality healthcare for all within the European Union. The main challenges it is facing include enlargement and its' impact on healthcare, e-commerce and health on the internet, presenting new ways to communicate and distribute information, as well as advertising to the public. Promoting equal opportunities for male and female doctors is an important topic for the committee in order to take the lead in this important professional field. The issue of patient's rights to seek medical treatment in other EU member states with financial remuneration will gradually be of increasing importance.
