PRESS RELEASE by public health department- AVIAN INFUENZA - 12/2/2004

Any travellers to areas currently experiencing outbreaks of Avian Influenza A(H5NI) in poultry and which include the Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Taiwan, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Cambodia and Pakistan, are to avoid contact with live animal markets and poultry farms.

At this stage we are not advising any travellers restriction to the above areas provided the above precaution is taken.

Although a small number of human cases has been reported in Vietnam and Thailand, these have been linked to direct contact with diseases birds and at present there is no evidence that the disease is spreading from person to person.

Consumers are reminded that they ensure that all foods from poultry, including eggs are thoroughly cooked.
