60 doctors in government employ
Sixty foreign doctors and 31 nurses and midwives are working for the Department of Health and Care of the Elderly, Health Minister Louis Deguara said in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

He said that 12 of the doctors are from Slovakia, 11 from Poland and another 11 from Serbia and Montenegro. The other doctors come from Bosnia, and Ukraine, five; the Czech Republic and Russia, three; Holland and Lebanon, two, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Greece, and Norway, one each.

Foreigners at St Luke's
Health Minister Louis Deguara said yesterday that 4,122 foreigners used the out-patients department of St Luke's Hospital last year and 1,229 were in-patients.

This year, up to last month, there were 4,281 foreign out-patients and 1,013 in-patients. Dr Deguara said information on money owed to the hospital by foreigners or their insurers was being collected.
