Insurers upset by MAM circular - MAM reaction - 2/8/2003

In a letter to the MAM , the Malta Insurance Association strongly objected to the MAM circular issued on July as regards to the possibility of direct payment by patients instead of direct settlement (through insurers) to doctors. Amongst other things the letter stated that insurers felt that pending approval by the Office of Fair trading, the old agreement should continue to apply.

In a letter of reply, MAM pointed out that since the old agreement has expired, and the new one is awaiting approval by the office of fair trading, there is presently no effective agreement between insurers and MAM.

In these circumstances, MAM re-iterated its position that doctors are free to charge any fee the deem as reasonable, and choose the method of payment which they feel is most appropriate.
