Health authorities are trying to get the service on cheap - MAM
PIETA', Malta (di-ve news)--November 09, 2005 -- 1530CET--Doctors' leaders have strongly criticised the Health authorities for being reluctant to fill vacancies at St.Luke's.

Speaking at press conference, Medical Association of Malta (MAM) chief Dr. Stephen Fava said that the ongoing exodus of Maltese Medical professional looking for better opportunities abroad seems unstoppable.

Dr.Fava explained that working conditions at St.Luke's emergency department are deterioriting and stress levels increasing substantially for doctors as Health authorities are trying to get the service on the cheap by shifting doctors from other departments to casuality rather than filling vacancies.

He said that with these practices, patients could be put at risk.

Dr.Fava added that at the least, the health authorities in order to temporarily solve the problem should call off-duty doctors to aleviate the burden

MAM president said that to add insult to injury, government decided to move a number of doctors from the emergency department as part of the CHOGM emergency medical arrangements.

He added that the association has issued a directive to its members not to move from their assigned department.
