Appreciation Dr. Lino German

Dr Lino German one of the founders of the Medical Association of Malta(MAM) and one of the leaders of the Medical profession form 1973 to 1988 has passed away on the 30th November 2005.

Dr Lino J German qualified from the Medical School of the Royal University of Malta in 1955 and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1962. In 1977 he was elected fellow of the royal college of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Dr. German’s interest in the affairs of the medical profession dates back to the time when he joined the Medical Officers’ Union as a newly qualified doctor. He took an active part in the momentous dispute of 1956 and represented the junior Medical Staff at St. Luke’s Hospital on the MOU’s Action Committee. He served on the committee of the Medical Association of Malta from 1973 up to 1998 and was honorary secretary from 1973 to 1988.

He played a leading role in the ten year long dispute between MAM and the Labour government which erupted in 1977. He has represented MAM in various international fora including the general assemblies of the world medical association.

Up to his final days Dr. German was ethics office to the council of the Medical Association of Malta, and continued to follow with interest the activities of the association. He currently held the position of treasurer of the Commonwealth Medical Association, an organization in which he had been active since 1985.

His book “Landmarks in the Medical Unionism in Malta 1937-1987” published in 1991 documented the history of the Medical Association of Malta as seen through one of the most long standing leaders of the Association. This book will remain his legacy.
