EP plenary vote: healthcare out from the services directive

Today, the European Parliament has radically modified the initial proposal of the European Commission for a Directive on Services.

The compromises negotiated between the two major political groups received strong backing from MEPs. The amended text was adopted by 391 votes to 213, with 34 abstentions.

Concerning health care, the Plenary has followed the amendments adopted by the IMCO committee. Services of general interest and some services of general economic interest, such as healthcare, are excluded. Healthcare as such, regardless of the ways in which it is organised at national level or whether it is public or private is out of the scope of the Directive.
