Admissions ward dispute drags on
Cynthia Busuttil

The general secretary of the Medical Association of Malta, Martin Balzan, said yesterday he doubts whether the dispute over the new medical admissions ward at St Luke's Hospital will be resolved within the next few days.

The Health Division and the MAM are in contact with each other trying to find a solution to the dispute. But the association said thorough consultations still need to be carried out. The ward, which was due to open on Monday, remains closed as MAM directives for doctors not to admit patients remain in place.

The ward was to provide an area where patients could be diagnosed and treated after which they would either be discharged or admitted to another ward within three days.

MAM, however, feels that patient safety could not be guaranteed considering the shortage of doctors.
