New Health care professions act presented in parliament - 22/9/2003

The long awaited Health care professions act has been presented in parliament for the 2nd reading, and will now go to the committee stage.

This law brings Maltese law in line with european legislation, and establishes the specialist register, where family Medicine has also been included.

The act also allows for recognition of EU qualifications, but also empowers the council to assess linguistic profeciency.

A majority of both the Medical Council, and the Specialist Accreditation committee will be elected by doctors.

By and large the act contains many of MAM's recommendations. However MAM is examining the bill as the association feels there are still a few of points which can be improved.
