MUMN to escalate as from Monday - 25/9/2003

BIRKIRKARA, Malta (di-ve news)--September 25, 2003 - 1130CET--The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) said that medical authorities have withdrawn the directive of stop leave imposed on nurses in hospitals.

MUMN president Rudolph Cini told di-ve.com that after the union filed a judicial protest in court against the Director General of the Health Division, medical authorities are not being inflexible in approving leave forwarded by nurses.

The MUMN is threatening to intensify industrial action after reaching an impasse with government in negotiations over its collective agreement.

The union's action committee is to meet in the coming days to discuss how it will intensify its directives, if the union fails to receive any reply by Monday.

The union said that it has not received any feedback from the authorities, following the second letter sent to the Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami.

Mr. Cini told di-ve.com that he had a telephone conversation with Social Policy Minister Lawrence Gonzi, in which he was given a clear idea of the union's dispute over the collective agreement.
