Interventional Neurology:
neurosurgery in the management of movement disorders

Rapidly advancing technology has increased our understanding of brain function in health and disease. On this basis, Functional Neurosurgery has made startling progress in the treatment of certain chronic neurological disorders. Electrodes implanted deep within various structures of the human brain allow clinicians to modify abnormal brain activity providing relief from disabling symptoms. This is best exemplified by the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease and dystonia. However, surgical modulation of human brain function can influence thought and emotion as well as movement. Indeed, novel indications for DBS include cluster headache, chronic pain, severe depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome. This treatment modality demands a multidisciplinary approach in a well-equipped neurosurgical environment. Awareness of the medical profession regarding the benefits these interventions provide is essential in ensuring patient access to an improved quality of life.

Graduating MD from the University of Malta in 1995, Ludvic Zrinzo pursued postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. He was awarded a Masters in Clinical Neuroscience with distinction from the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Neurological Surgery. Following research fellowships at Queen Square and UCLA, he was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon and Senior Clinical Researcher at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square. His research interests include refinement of surgical precision in stereotactic approaches, novel brain targets and clinical applications of deep brain stimulation.
