The Association of Surgeons of Malta is pleased to announce that an exhibition on the famous 18th Century Maltese Surgeon, Michel’Angiolo Grima will be held at the Medical School, Mater Dei Hospital during September 2008.

The exhibition will be opened by Professor Godfrey LaFerla, Dean of the University of Malta MedicalSchool on Tuesday 2nd September 2008 at 11.30 am. All Medical doctors and the public are invited to attend.

The exhibition was curated by Professor Charles Savona Ventura assisted by Mr Charles Borg Galea and will include various exhibits relating to Michel’Angiolo Grima including surgical instruments, publications, ex-voto painting and his baptisimal and funerary mass records amongst many others.

Michel’Angiolo Grima (1729-1798) joined the School of Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria at the age of 14 years. In 1750 he was sent by the order to Santa Maria Nuova Hospital in Florence and he obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy and Medicine from the University of Pisa. He subsequently worked in Florence and Paris and joined the French Army for two years of the seven years war. He then returned to Malta in 1763 where he was appointed Chief Surgeon and Lecturer in Anatomy and Surgery. Grima published extensively in Florence, Messina, Paris, Venice, London and Malta.

An eight page colour pamphlet has been produced by Prof C Savona Ventura and Komm George G Buttigieg and is on sale for Euro 2.
