Health Care Professions act. A first class law with an unfortunate misprint
The Medical Association of Malta would like to express its satisfaction and appreciation on the approval in parliament in the committee stage of the “Health care professions act”.
The Medical profession in Malta can now enjoy the benefits of regulation establishing EU standards. The new law establishes a new authority which recognizes specialist training certificates and regulates post graduate training so as to conform with the highest EU standards. The establishment of the specialist register will benefit both doctors and patients.
All this was the result of the co-operation between MAM and the authorities and the positive contribution of both the Health Minister Dr Louis Deguara, and the director general of the Health division Dr Ray Busuttil.
However against this positive background, a misprint in one of the articles of the first Schedule would bar MAM officials from sitting on the specialist accreditation committee even though the law establishes that MAM has the right to be represented on the board. It would be very unfortunate if MAM officials who sit on European boards of both specialist and of family doctors would not be allowed to sit on the Maltese speciality board.
MAM trusts that the spirit of good will which has prevailed so far will lead to the immediate correction of this misprint.
