The Medical Association of Malta (MAM) echoes the World Medical Association’s deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the situation continues to place innocent lives and essential healthcare services in jeopardy.
Across the region, there is a devastating shortage of safe shelter, clean water, food, and critical medical supplies. Vulnerable communities are facing mounting risks to their health, safety, and dignity. MAM is particularly alarmed by reports of civilian casualties occurring near humanitarian aid distribution centres.
We call on all parties to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint, especially in and around aid centres and civilian shelters. The protection of human life and the preservation of humanitarian space must remain a priority in accordance with international humanitarian norms.
MAM is gravely concerned about the conditions under which medical professionals are being forced to operate. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers are working in life-threatening environments, lacking basic resources and protection, while doing their utmost to care for the wounded and sick.
We join the World Medical Association in urging all parties to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law. This includes facilitating safe, dignified, and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid; ensuring the availability of food, water, and essential medicines; and securing the immediate release of hostages.
MAM reaffirms its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and appeals to all involved to pursue a path toward sustainable peace, in full respect of human rights and the ethical principles of medical neutrality.
