“No Speculation on Medical Education” – Medical Association of Malta Demands Accountability Over IEU Scandal

The Medical Association of Malta (MAM) has condemned the regulatory failures that allowed the so-called International European University (IEU) to operate in Malta, leaving hundreds of foreign students stranded, out of pocket, and with their futures in ruins.

MAM is holding the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) directly responsible for what it describes as a “grave failure of oversight.”

“Medical education is not a commodity. This scandal has ruined lives, exploited vulnerable students, and tarnished Malta’s reputation. Regulatory negligence of this magnitude cannot be ignored,” said the President of MAM.

Key Failings Identified by MAM

  • Improper Licensing – IEU was allowed to recruit students despite lacking proper accreditation, clinical facilities, and academic standards.
  • Ignored Warnings – Red flags and complaints were overlooked until the issue was forced into the open.
  • Reputation Tarnished – Malta’s application to the European Quality Assurance Register (EQAR) was rejected earlier this year, citing lack of transparency, weak accreditation, and excessive political interference.
  • Predatory Practices – Students were misled by false promises and aggressive advertising.

MAM’s Demands

  1. Independent Public Inquiry into MFHEA’s failures.
  2. Immediate Remedies for Students: full tuition refunds, transfer support, recognition of valid coursework, and psychological assistance.
  3. Systemic Reforms: mandatory consultation with the Malta Medical Council and qualified medical educators; transparent site visits before accreditation; and full disclosure of all medical education providers operating in Malta.

Standing With Students

“We stand with every student whose future has been compromised. Malta cannot allow predatory institutions to exploit people’s hopes of becoming doctors. Standards must be upheld, students must be protected, and Malta’s credibility must be restored,” MAM stated.
