Happy Workers Day
Dear Colleagues,
It is a privilege to be able to address you today as the newly elected President of the Medical Association of Malta (MAM).
First and foremost, I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you — not just for your trust and support, but also for your unwavering commitment to our profession.
Our strength lies in our unity, and it is with this spirit that we embark on a new chapter together.
As you know, the first Council meeting took place on Friday, 25th April.
The Council positions have already been announced, and I am very proud to be part of this new team. I am surrounded by exceptionally talented and hardworking colleagues, and I very much look forward to working closely with them as we serve you over the coming term.
The MAM belongs to all of us. It is not simply a Council — it is the collective voice of every doctor who serves patients with dedication, compassion, and professionalism. It is with this deep sense of responsibility that we set out the first steps for the new Council’s work.
Council Priorities and Structure
-
- Commitment to Transparency
We will be posting regular updates on Council activities and issues affecting our members.
Transparency and inclusiveness will be at the heart of everything we do.
Organizing Our Work: Subcommittees and Working Groups
We are following a bottom-up, peripheral-centric approach to make sure every member’s voice is heard.
We have created two types of Subcommittees and Working Groups:
General Subcommittees and Working Groups (covering cross-cutting issues affecting all members)
1. Modernizing MAM
– Updating workflows, IT systems, communication methods
– Revising the MAM Statute to reflect today’s realities
2. Financial and Economic Workgroup
– Reviewing pay structures, pensions, and financial matters important to the profession
3. Quality of Life, Work-Life Balance, and Innovation Group
– Promoting new ways of working, including flexible work and job sharing
– Prioritizing wellbeing and sustainable working conditions
The work of these groups will form the basis for our demands in the upcoming collective agreement negotiations starting next year.
In addition to these initiatives, we are also committed to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of our members. We will be introducing counselling and burnout prevention services tailored for healthcare professionals. In this regard, we will be reaching out to qualified experts to help us build the right support structures for our community.
Specific Subcommittees and Working Groups (focused on the needs of distinct groups)
Organized by:
– Grade (e.g., Consultants, Resident Specialists, BST/HST Trainees)
– Sector or Location (e.g., GPs in Public Service, Community-based doctors)
Timeline:
– Finalize the list of specific subcommittees: within one week

– Identify members for each subcommittee: by the end of May
Our clear aim: everyone must be represented.
Terminology
We will refer to these bodies collectively as Subcommittees and Working Groups, depending on the scope and nature of the task.
Final Note
Together, we will build on the achievements of our predecessors, modernize MAM, defend our rights, and promote dignity and wellbeing within our profession.
While looking forward to working with you all, we remain committed to our core belief:
“What divides us weakens us. What unites us makes us stronger.”
With gratitude and commitment,
Dr. Patrick Sammut
President
Medical Association of Malta (MAM)
